This lovely print is in the Museum of London's collection. it dates from 1818. I've read in 2 books that mourning outfits from this time period were never all black. But this print seems to dispute that!
I found your site from the WhatIWore2Day blog. I read a book that you are probably familiar with but might enjoy: The Mourner's Dance - Katherine Ashenburg.
Thanks for the info, I've just requested it from the library! Have you heard of this book - Love and Loss - American Portrait and Mourning Miniatures by Robin Jaffee Frank? I just for it from the library and it was quite lovely!
I bought that book of Love and Loss not realizing it was mostly about miniatures. Kind of expensive when I was looking for a book on mouurning customs, clothing, and jewelry. :( Val
I love your blog! I could have given my right arm to attend the One Hundred Years Of Mourning Fashion at Costume College! All the ladies looked beyond lovely!
Thank you. I left the links to the video someone did of the first presentation we did at Dickens. Its really cool to listen to the Beethoven music that went with it while you're reading. Very atmospheric. I would love to do this more often but trying to get that many ladies together is really hard. We're still waiting for the professional photos that were taken of us at CoCo so you can see all of us in great detail. Val

Thank you for this. My one model in our mourning fashion show doing this time period was only able to find a few photos herself.
